Cold Battery

Our Cold Battery is an insulated container filled with Phase Change Material. (PCM) It is the core of our system technology; storing thermal energy. The PCM stores the cold and gradually releases the cold to maintain the set temperature.

The Battery is mounted outside the cargo area and is recharged via an refrigeration unit, which is installed on board the vehicle or is remote. The Battery has a wide controllable temperature range to meet your specific application needs;  -18ºC today and +4ºC for the next shipment.

The set temperature can be maintained for up to eight days. The cold from the Battery is passed to a heat exchanger in the cargo area using an environmental friendly coolant. A thermostat is used to set the temperature. We can deliver the Battery in several shapes. During our consultation, our sales department can determine the bestdimensions and most suitable location.

Battery applications

This system is suitable for long distance distributions as well as door-to-door deliveries and ideal for an operation with multiple stops and door openings. During the stops the Battery continues to silently exchange cold. If your vehicle has a start/stop system, the independent refrigeration system remains operational.

The Batteries, as well as the Beams, can also be used as supplemental refrigeration in cold stores and freezer rooms, data centers, or office buildings. This application is useful as a back-up system in case of a power outage. It also saves costs to stay within low costs energy contracts and can be used as an extra refrigeration source on warm days to avoid overdimensioned equipment.

Cold Beams

Our Cold Beams are made out of polyethylene and filled with Phase Change Material. (PCM) It is the core of our system technology; storing thermal energy. The PCM stores the cold and gradually releases the cold to maintain the set temperature.

The Beams are charged via internal stainless steel or aluminum pipes through which a refrigerant is flowing that solidifies the compound. The refrigerant is cooled electrically or with liquid nitrogen. The Beams are mounted by a stainless steel suspension system to the ceiling or wall, depending on the prefered configuration.

During operation the Beams exchange cold within the cargo area. The temperature of the Beam is stable, based on the customer speficications. For refrigeration applications the temperature can be speficied between 0°C and 8°C. For freezing applications, the temperatures between -18°C and -25°C.

Our Beams application uses natural cold radiation; the cold exchange takes place without the need for additional energy. For a chilled application, below 0°C, a thermostat controlled ventilator is installed, to maintain a constant temperature throughout the cargo area.

Beams applications

Our solutions have been applied in refrigerated containers without access to power for example in sea or rail transport. The container remains at the selected temperature for up to eight days without recharging.

Our Beams can be installed in any cargo area, for instance home delivery vans. The robust, synthetic Beams filled with our solid compound are 100% leak proof.

Charging options

The BoTemp charging systems are suitable for charging both the Battery and the Beams and can be used in vehicles and containers. Below you find an overview of the possibilities.

Remote Electrical Cold Charger

This application consists of a stationary charging system, usually located at your operational base. The Battery or Beams are charged through a quick release coolant connector. The advantages of this Charger are the lower weight and costs since the Charger stays at the home base. Also it is easy to maintain, can be used by various vehicles and has lower wear.

The Battery or Beams have a separate circuit isolated from the Charging side of the system. This avoids leakage during connection.

Depending on the capacity of the charger, the quick release system, and the amount of PCM compound, the charging time is four to six hours.

Remote Nitrogen Cold Charger

This system is identical to the Remote Electrical Cold Charger, however the coolant is charged with liquid nitrogen. The major advantage of charging with liquid nitrogen is the short charging time. Depending on the capacity of the Charger, the quick release system and the size of the Battery or Beams, the charge time is two to six hours.

On Board Refrigeration Unit

In this application the cold generation unit is carried on board your vehicle. Beams and Battery are charged with external phase power (380V) as soon as the unit is hooked up. The refrigeration unit consists of a semi-hermetically sealed compressor, available in various capacities. Charging starts automatically, and the system is easy to operate.

In this application your power source is always available, where ever you are. Only an electricity hook-up is required. The Beams or Battery are charged at night when power is most affordable. Depending on the capacity of the refrigeration unit, and remaining capacity in the Beam or Battery, the charging time takes six to eight hours.

Charging with an in-house refrigeration system

If your company has a cold store facility, it is possible to charge the Beams or Battery with your own stationary refrigeration system. This saves you the purchase of a charging system. Usually the BoTemp equiped vehicles are charged at night when the refrigeration system of the cold store has excess capacity. After all there are very few door openings at night, and the ambient temperature of the cold store is lower. To facilitate the correct connection, a dedicated coupling system is placed between the cold store facility and the Charger.
